Although universally recognised for manufacturing excellence the area has experienced big economic changes and developments. New employment sites around the M65 junctions have been successfully filled with a range of diverse and thriving businesses, particularly in the service and high technology sectors.

The area was named "England's Northwest Capital of Enterprise" in 2005 and is recognised as the principal wealth creator within Lancashire, supporting the success of the regional economy and creating well paid jobs for local people.  Blackburn with Darwen is a place where the public, private, community and voluntary sectors all work together to improve the collective prosperity for our organisations and people; an area with an exciting future. Corporate Investors in People status was awarded in 2007.

Blackburn with Darwen area enjoys excellent communications. The M65 forms a significant link from the Borough to other parts of East Lancashire and to the M61/M6 to the West. The A59 trunk road provides many people in the north with easy access to Blackburn and the A666 gives good links through Darwen to Bolton and Greater Manchester.

Blackburn is the main centre of the rail network in East Lancashire with services to all local stations and throughout North West England. Bus services reach all parts of the borough. Business support Business Link Blackburn offers support to existing and new business in the Borough, including grant assistance, site and property identification and networking with other key agencies.

Our libraries attract over 1 million visitors annually and provide an extensive range of services to a very diverse customer base. The Central Library, located in the heart of Blackburn town centre, provides a full service 7 days per week.
